OBERMOSER des Rottensteiner Thomas
St. Magdalena โข Bozen/Bolzano โข Sรผdtirol/Alto Adige โข Italy
โฐ Living Wine Culture in the Alps: 1890 the great-great-grandfather of Thomas acquired the house with cellar and some vines. Since then our little wine estate has grown with various challenges and is now an established estate bottler. You may see wine in our veins: the four great-grandfathers all had vineyards in the picturesque St. Magdalena Classico wine district to the north-east of the city Bozen/Bolzano. Rooted in this winegrower ancestry our intrinsic passion seeks to achieve the most pleasing EnjoyVino for you and us. Our gifted vineyards and we: from the grapevine to the wineglass pure and mostly traditional handcraft. Only by caring for every step of the wine we feel one with the bottle we hand over to those who also believe in this fascinating typical product.
๐ฑ Persons: Thomas Rottensteiner (Independent Winegrower, owner since 2012), Heinrich Rottensteiner (senior, winepap), Margareth Pechlaner Rottensteiner (winegram), Christian Rottensteiner (English, Office-Assistance) and occasionally family members and winelover-friends.
๐ Terroir: Almost 4 ha mostly on 3 sites in the St. Magdalener Classico area (319-550 m a.m.s.l.), one site in the Kalterer See Classico area (365-405 m a.m.s.l.). All on rather steep slopes and hills with up to over 60 % inclination.
๐ฟ Vineyards: A handful of native Vernatsch/Schiava/Trollinger varieties and the also native Lagrein almost all grown on traditional pergola together with a small amount of complimentary red varieties. Sauvignon Blanc grows mostly on the guyot system. Average Vine Density: ~6500/ha. Vine age: 1~60 years.
๐ฑ Olive groves: over 100 trees of various frost resistant cultivars in 3 sites (Leccino, Frantoio, Casaliva, Grignano, Moraiolo, etc.). Tree age: 1~40 years.
๐ Main Varieties bottled in different wine selections:
Red St. Magdalener Classico: violet, elegant, noble, complex, friendly – the Vernatsch varieties are the Tyrolean Alter ego of the Pinot noir – can remind a joyfull Burgundian.
Red Lagrein: dark, terroir, plummy, chewy – you can literally imagine the earth where he was born – suggested for those interested in a “smooth Bordeaux style”.
White Sauvignon Blanc: full, floral, vegetal, intrinsic herbaceous, grassy-nettles – here rich in fine tropical fruit aromas and fresh due to the Alpine origin.
๐พ Wine Bottles/Year: approx. 32000.
Wine Cellar: mainly Big oak barrels from Mittelberger Cask Masters.
๐ท Vision: While satisfying as an experience the cultivation and vinification of Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot Noir did never feel “natural” for our terroir. Therefore in the new millennium we are again and totally focusing on native varieties and the top interpretations and selections of them. For St. Magdalener and Lagrein taking full advantage of our Gran Cru sites. Using the traditional Tyrolean wooden barrel vinification going back to Rhaetian times (pre-Roman). Staying small and focused, creating top wine enjoyment for lasting memories. We believe the Reds beside being Classics are among the Best of the area/variety and the White is an interesting expression of a mountain slope terroir.
